No one studied law during the European Renaissance with such precision, clarity, boldness, and penetrating insight as Montesquieu. In his book, *The Spirit of the Laws*, he explained and criticized the known systems of government, distinguishing between them: monarchy, in which the ruler inherits power from his predecessor; dictatorship, in which power is vested in the ruler alone without legal limits, always consolidating his rule by terrorizing the civilian population; and the third of these systems, republicanism, a system in which the people rule through representatives chosen according to a mechanism that ensures their ability to remove and hold accountable. A republic is the ideal system of government, from Montesquieu's perspective. Any system of government must strive to guarantee human freedom. To do so, the three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—must be separated and balanced. In his book, Montesquieu redefines virtue and honor, placing these meanings within the framework of the republic and linking their meaning to politics. For him, "virtue" in a republic means love of the homeland, that is, love of equality. It is not a moral virtue, but a political one.
