Ghassan Kanafani, the author of this novel, represents a special model of the political writer.
A novelist, short story writer, and critic, he was as creative in his writing as he was in his life, struggle, and martyrdom. In 1966, he won the Friends of the Book Award in Lebanon for “Best Novel” for his novel “What Remains for You.” He also won the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ) Award in 1974, and the Lotus Award, awarded by the Union of Writers of Asia and Africa, in 1975. His novel “Men in the Sun,” published in Beirut in 1963, is considered one of the first Palestinian novels to write about displacement, death, and confusion. In it, he tells the story of three Palestinians from different generations who meet around the need to find an individual solution to the Palestinian people’s livelihood problem by fleeing to Kuwait, home to oil and wealth. Abu Qais. The old man who dreams of building a room somewhere outside the camp, Asaad: the young man who dreams of Kuwaiti dinars and a new life, and Marwan: the young man who is trying to overcome his living tragedy. His brother in Kuwait left them without a breadwinner because he got married, and his father left his mother to marry a woman who owns a house. He must therefore support the family and decides to come to Kuwait.
In his novel, Ghassan Kanafani condemns all parties that caused the Palestinian Nakba: the incompetent leaders, the traitorous leaders, the surrendered people, and those who...
They abandoned the earth to seek their own salvation.
