The novel is heavily based on the author's personal experience as a military doctor during Portugal's colonial war in Angola in the 1960s and 1970s. It revolves around a military doctor named António who returns from the war burdened with painful memories and nightmares. Through an internal stream of thoughts (stream of consciousness), he tries to confront his shattered self, torn between the reality of civilian life and the memories of horror, death, and absurdity he experienced in the war. The novel is rich in deep psychological style and reveals the hell within a person as much as it exposes the atrocities of war, where "hell" is not an external place, but rather a knowledge that a person lives within themselves, through regret, guilt, and indelible memories.
