I continued to think about Pedro Camacho's life. What social milieu, what series of people, connections, problems, coincidences, and events resulted in that literary message (was it literary? If not, what was it?) that was realized for him, crystallized in his works, and found an audience? How could he be a parody of a writer, even though he is the only person in Peru who deserves to be called one, given the time he devoted to writing and the works he accomplished? Are those politicians, lawyers, and teachers who bear the titles of poets, novelists, and playwrights writers simply because one of them composed a booklet of poetry or a short collection of short stories in the short period of their lives, four-fifths of which are spent in activities unrelated to literature? Why are those who use literature as an ornament or an excuse less worthy of being writers than Pedro Camacho, who lived solely for writing?
