I recently turned forty, and I have, in spite of myself, become one of those who look back more than they look forward. With this frequent looking back, I have begun to notice the emptiness staining our social memory and political archives; the truncated narratives and flat stories, and the manifestations of lazy binary thinking, where crude alignments trample every day on the old face of the old woman of truth, and where a regression to a climate of absolute certainties daily blocks the path for those who dare to know. It is a world created by censorship, which we often dare to reject on legal or political grounds, yet we have not approached closely enough to understand its social and moral impact, nor have we spoken sufficiently about the distortions afflicting its nurturing society. Otherwise, how come most of us have come to peer at the world through the eye of the censor and resort to its logic? In a society where censorship transcends its physical existence as an administrative apparatus, forming a dominant and oppressive culture in every detail, it is difficult for one to adopt a position based on clear and named data, to test one's convictions or discover them. In the words of Henry Steel Commajor: "Censorship creates a society that cannot be mature." And this is what we have become... a society of eternal minors; creatures stuck in the "limbo" of civil childhood, their right to transform into fully-fledged citizens confiscated, and they are condemned to live outside the laws of cultural influence and impact, and thus outside of history.
