The book explores the not-so-frequent idea that we don't need a lot of things or hoard them. Acting according to this principle gives us enough time to enjoy or do what's most important, as well as, of course, saving money, and ultimately leading to a very acceptable life. The book's premise is based on advocating for a minimalist lifestyle and rationing possessions. This isn't a new idea, but Baker, a former pastor, advocates for it from a psychological and emotional perspective. He says, "Owning too much stuff won't make us happy; worse, it distances us further from the sources of happiness itself! Once we get rid of the things that don't matter to us, we'll be free to choose and practice the things that truly matter." The story began one summer day in 2008, when Baker and his wife decided to start their annual housecleaning, starting with the garage. At the end of that arduous task, the result was devastating: a pile of dirt and many dusty items piled up on the driveway. He found that he didn't need or use them often, so he decided to get rid of them: “We started selling the things we didn't want, giving some away to those who needed them, and throwing the rest in the trash. Within six months, we got rid of 50% of our belongings. We quickly saw the benefits of reducing and owning possessions, and we established a philosophy that highlights the benefits that each individual gains through simple and purposeful living.”
