Alexandre Dumas was born in Villars-Cotterts on July 24, 1802. His father was a retired general and his mother was a black slave. His childhood was sad and miserable. From 1830 to 1848, Dumas began writing romantic articles in newspapers. He then wrote his famous novel, Queen Margot, followed by The Count of Monte Cristo. Twenty years later, he wrote La Madame de Monsoreau. Dumas' financial situation improved greatly due to his novel and its great success. In 1864, Dumas returned to France and continued writing until his death on December 5, 1870.
