Maupassant is one of the most brilliant contemporary short story writers, and critics have dubbed him "the father of the short story." His stories are distinguished by their brilliant brevity while maintaining his traditional depth, emotion, and clever sense of irony, without vulgarity or affectation. Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850, in Tourville-sur-Arc, Normandy, France, and died in Paris on July 6, 1893. His mother, Laure Le Poitevin, introduced him to literature, as she was an avid reader of the great classics and a particular lover of William Shakespeare.
