The novel "The Self-Made Man" belongs to a collection of works by Hernán Ribera Letelier devoted entirely to the world of saltpeter settlements in the Chilean Atacama Desert. However, there is something different that sets it apart from the rest: it is a mixture of autobiography and fictional fiction. The author, born on July 11, 1950, told Chilean radio station Duna 89.7 FM that he seeks "to make the reader believe, after reading the novel, that the real is imaginary, and the imaginary is real," especially since it is well known in local circles that Letelier was born in the settlement of Algorta before moving to the settlements of Maria Elena and Pedro de Valdebia, where he completed his studies.
