One of Hermann Hesse's earliest novels, it was completed in 1908 and first published in 1914. Coyote Canyon Press described this precursor to Hesse's celebrated works as a "lost novel," never to be reprinted or translated into other languages. The story follows the lives of four elderly people who, for various reasons, end up in a home for the poor near the small German town of Gerbersau, the author's birthplace. The novel thus becomes a tapestry through which Hesse explores the stages of his youth, the realm of his soul, and the consequences of his old age in his crumbling world. It almost seems like the first drawings on the walls of a psychological prison.
