The book consists of fifteen main chapters that include many stories whose protagonists are animals. Among the most prominent animal characters in the book are the lion, who plays the role of king, and his servant, the ox named "Shatrabah" (or Shanzabah in some versions), in addition to two jackals, "Kalila" and "Dimna." It also includes four other chapters
that appear at the beginning of the book: the chapter on the introduction to the book, the chapter on the mission of Borzuy to India, the chapter on the presentation of the book (translated by Abdullah ibn al-Muqaffa'), and the chapter on Borzuy (translated by Buzurjmihr ibn al-Bukhtakan). The Arabic version of the book played a crucial role in its spread and transmission to world languages, either directly from the Arabic text or through intermediary languages that drew from the Arabic text. Ancient Arab critics classify Kalila wa Dimna in the first class of Arab books and consider it one of the four excellent books alongside Al-Kamil by Al-Mubarrad, Al-Bayan wa Al-Tabyin by Al-Jahiz, and Al-Umdah by Ibn Rashiq.
