Principles of Philosophy, Part 1

A summary of the most important philosophies from the dawn of history until now

Author's name: Hani Hajjaj

Plato believed that the purpose of human existence is to utilize our rationality and attempt to find truth, the ideal, intrinsic forms of things, that exist outside of our physical perception, but within us. He therefore believed that philosophy was the highest and most important human endeavor. Some argue that the pursuit of truth is what makes us human. By learning philosophy, we begin to see a variety of new things, which we would otherwise assume existed. Philosophy works in much the same way as science in this respect. Science reveals to us the laws of nature, which change the way we think about things from an early age. Similarly, philosophy reveals to us another layer of existence, one more fundamental than science. It is the layer of thought, human experience, the nature of our very reality and how we acquire scientific knowledge—problems into which scientists do not wander for fear of getting lost in a murky world of thought and speculation. They prefer the concrete world, where things can be seen and experienced, and where firm conclusions can be reached.
