Throughout my nearly thirty years of journalistic and academic work, I have been preoccupied with what happened, not as it has been ingrained in our minds and hearts by famous narratives whose authors deliberately made it the only narrative, but through books, newspapers, and the testimonies of living and dead witnesses, I place the event on the dissection table to encompass everything related to it, and through research, investigation, scrutiny, comparison, rejection, acceptance, doubt, and skepticism, I arrive at what I am confident is closer to the truth.
In these chapters, we will refute common accusations in our history that have been leveled against famous figures, expose figures we did not know much about, discover writings and books that remained unknown among the pages of history, and hold battles that we thought were ignited for the sake of truth, only to find that the motives behind them were personal, and the driving force behind them was self-serving.
In these chapters, I do not seek to condemn anyone, nor to defend anyone.
We are simply retelling the stories, for history has no final word, but there are always different faces to the same story. I will put all of that before you in an attempt to know the minimum truth, for my conviction is that the complete truth is that which we can never know.
These chapters hold many surprises, through which we can reconsider what some wanted us to consider as what actually happened in our political, cultural and journalistic lives. On the margins of these surprises, lies will dissipate, facts will be shattered, narratives will fail, and personalities will be exposed.
