Edmond Dantes is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit and detained in the gloomy fortress of the Château d'If. There, he meets a fellow inmate who learns of a vast treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. He becomes determined not only to escape from prison but also to find the treasure and use it to exact revenge on the three men responsible for his imprisonment. Dumas's epic novel of suffering and revenge was inspired by the true case of a man wrongfully imprisoned and achieved enormous popular success when it was first published serially in the 1840s.
