"The search for the concept of 'text' is, in reality, nothing more than a search for the essence and nature of the 'Quran' as a linguistic text. It is a search that addresses the Qur'an as 'the greatest book of Arabic and its immortal literary influence.' The Qur'an is the most sacred book of Arabic art, whether the observer views it as such in religion or not." Considering the text as the center of our Islamic cultural sphere, and based on the linguistic approach to text analysis, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd presents his seminal study of the Qur'anic text, attempting to discover its nature and concept, to arrive at the essence of the complex relationship between the text and culture, in terms of its formation by it first, and its formation by it second. He also attempts to investigate the relationship between the Qur'anic text and other texts on the one hand, and its mechanisms for generating meaning on the other, through the concepts of 'miraculousness and eloquence,' 'ambiguity and clarity,' and 'interpretation and exegesis.' Finally, this study seeks to reveal the transformation that has affected the concept of the text and its function, by examining the thought of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali as the thinker at whose hands the currents and trends of religious thought, both official and popular, converged.
