Ibn al-Jawzi explained that he wrote this book because he would often have many thoughts (khawatir) that he would then become preoccupied with and forget. Therefore, it was important to preserve these thoughts so that they would not be lost, which is what he did in this book. It is, quite simply, a window into his inner thoughts, his analysis of those around him, and his perspectives on them. In it, he put down some of his ideas and observations on the human psyche, drawn from his personal experiences. These ideas are presented in an exquisite and highly eloquent manner, conveying the essence of his expertise. The book also contains numerous religious reflections, attempting to mend what we believe to be broken in our relationship with God, by mending us from within our souls.
