About the Translator
Samir Greiss studied German and its literature in Cairo and Mainz, Germany. He has translated about forty contemporary literary works from German, including: "The Piano Teacher" by Elfriede Jelinek (Nobel 2004), "Friendship" by Thomas Bernhard, "The Capital" by Robert Menasse, and "Don Juan" by Peter Handke (Nobel 2019). He also authored a book about the German writer Günter Grass (Nobel 1999) titled "Günter Grass and Facing a Past That Does Not Pass."
His translations published by "Al Karma Books" include the novel "The Pledge" by the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt, the novella "An Objective Account of a Morphine Addict's Happiness" by Hans Fallada, the novella "Dream" by Arthur Schnitzler, and the novel "Annette, an Epic" by Anne Weber.
Greiss received the "King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation" (Individual Efforts category) in 2022, the "Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding" in 2018, the "Goethe Institute Award for Literary Translation" (Experienced Translators category) in 2014, and the First Prize in Story Translation from the Supreme Council of Culture in Egypt in 1996.
