The second novel in Mahfouz's historical trilogy, its events unfold from the ancient Egyptian myth that inspired the Cinderella story. The young King Merenre II falls in love with the beautiful courtesan Rhodopis after finding one of her slippers, which had been snatched by an eagle while she was bathing. He pursues her, and a romantic relationship develops between them. Rhodopis helps him in his confrontation with the temple priests, as the king seeks to seize lands allocated to religious temples, a move the priests oppose. The conflict escalates, and a widespread revolt erupts, led by the priests, demanding that the king's wife, Netocris, assume the throne. Rhodopis remains loyal to the king until his death.
