Geblawi lives in his large house surrounded by gardens and high walls, surrounded by his sons and grandchildren, who are fighting over the endowment, while the thugs control the neighborhood and stand between Geblawi's sons and their earthly paradise, where the descendants have settled outside the walls of the large house since Adham and Idris were expelled. Despite their poverty and the injustice they face, they do not lose hope that Geblawi will emerge from his isolation to distribute his inheritance and free them from the brutality of the thugs. With every generation, a savior appears, to whom people cling and with whom they revolt against injustice. However, greed and ignorance ultimately return them to their former selves. The novel was published in Al-Ahram newspaper in 1959 and sparked a huge controversy, causing its publication as a book to be delayed for eight years.
