The third part of Naguib Mahfouz's famous trilogy, considered by many critics and literary experts to be the best and most important Arabic novel. Set between the mid-1930s and early 1940s, this part witnesses the greatest number of transformations in the life of Sayed Ahmed Abdel Gawad's family. The heroes of the previous two parts fade into the background, either due to death or voluntary withdrawal from life, while the generation of grandchildren takes center stage as they grow into young adults, each with their own passions and aspirations. Kamal shares the starring role as an observer of the transformations, always immersed in contemplation of people and events. The novel was published in 1957 and made the big screen in 1973.
