Pythias of Marseille was a Greek traveler who set out from Marseille in the fourth century BC, driven by a thirst for knowledge. He sailed north, venturing beyond the reach of any of his contemporaries, reaching the frigid fringes of Europe and describing its seas, long nights, and ever-present sun. For me, Pythias's story intersects with the story of Dhul-Qarnayn in the Holy Quran, in terms of their adherence to logical and scientific reasoning. They also share similarities in the details of their journeys; both reached the far reaches of the known world, and both journeys were linked to the sun, shadows, and the boundaries of daylight. Neither was content with scientific discoveries alone, but also sought to connect and integrate with the peoples they encountered. Furthermore, both possessed knowledge of various mining methods, particularly the mining of tin or copper. This is an inspiring story representing one of the earliest clashes between empirical reason and the authority of prevailing perceptions, an early moment of human awareness of their capabilities, where hypotheses transformed into measuring tools, moving from myth to observation, and where observation was recorded as an understandable phenomenon, not a "wonder."
