Alienation has become alienation and strangeness, and both have their validity. The difference between it and alienation lies in the form of the personal decision that the word “alienation” includes. A person’s alienation by personal decision is much gentler than a person’s alienation by an anonymous, imposed, external decision. Alienation is also a renewed source of amazement, even in sadness, even in despair, even in fleeting moments of happiness.

In her book, Mai El-Telmissany is careful to avoid common stereotypes about the immigrant, their longing for their homeland, and their suffering in exile.
