For Nietzsche, art represents the highest power of the false. It glorifies the world as a falsehood, sanctifies falsehood, and makes the will to deceive an ideal. The activity of life is the embodiment of the power of the false. In order for this power to be accomplished, it must be selected, multiplied, and repeated, that is, raised to a higher power. The power of the false must be transformed into the limits of the will to deceive, the will of an artist, which alone is capable of successfully competing with and opposing the ascetic ideal. Art creates lies that raise the false to the level of a higher affirmative power. For the artist, appearance no longer means the denial of reality in this world, but rather the selection and correction of any affirmation. This means that truth will take on a new significance and will thus be appearance, the elevation to the level of a higher power, that is, the truth of art, or, in Nietzsche's words, the creation of new possibilities for life.
