A week after Kimya's death, Shams al-Din disappeared, this time forever. Several theories exist regarding his disappearance. One, tending towards generalization due to its dramatic nature, suggests he was murdered at Ala al-Din's instigation. However, there is no evidence to support this account. Sultan Walad, in his poem about his father's life, dismisses this idea. A number of historians maintain that Shams al-Din returned to Tabriz, while one source states that he died in the city of Khoy on his way back to Tabriz.
