The Book of Al-Hawamil and Al-Shawamil is in fact two books by two great authors: questions by Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi called “Al-Hawamil” and answers by Miskawayh called “Al-Shawamil.” The meaning of “Al-Hawamil” is a camel that wanders and is left to graze by its owner, while “Al-Shawamil” is the animal that controls and rounds up the camels. Abu Hayyan borrowed the word “Al-Hawamil” for his scattered questions awaiting answers, while Miskawayh used the word “Al-Shawamil” for his answers, thus controlling Abu Hayyan’s Al-Hawamil. The Book of Al-Hawamil indicates that Abu Hayyan was a philosophical personality who extracted questions from everything he encountered, whether the issues were moral, social, linguistic, economic, or psychological.
The book also indicates that Abu Hayyan was broad-minded and multifaceted, and in this respect he preferred Miskawayh. Miskawayh was narrower in his outlook and was worse at expressing himself. Al-Tawhidi's style of questioning is a wonderful literary and artistic style, even distinct from Miskawayh's philosophical style, which is surrounded by ambiguity. Abu Hayyan was a philosopher with philosophers, a theologian with theologians, a linguist with linguists, and a Sufi with Sufis... His horizons expanded to include research into the essence of God and His attributes.
