The Book of Al-Hawamil and Al-Shawamil is in fact two books by two great authors: questions from Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi, which he called "Al-Hawamil" (the neglected ones), and answers from Miskawayh, which he called "Al-Shawamil" (the comprehensive ones). "Al-Hawamil" refers to grazing camels neglected by their owners and left to graze, while "Al-Shawamil" refers to the animals that control and gather the camels. Abu Hayyan borrowed the word "Al-Hawamil" for his scattered questions awaiting answers, and Miskawayh used the word "Al-Shawamil" for his responses, thus organizing Abu Hayyan's questions. The Book of Al-Hawamil demonstrates that Abu Hayyan was a brilliant philosophical figure who drew questions from everything he encountered, whether the issues were ethical, social, linguistic, economic, or psychological.
The book also demonstrates that Abu Hayyan was broad-minded and multifaceted, surpassing even Miskawayh in this respect. Miskawayh was narrower in scope and less eloquent. Al-Tawhidi's style in his questions is a magnificent literary and artistic style, even surpassing Miskawayh's philosophical style, which is shrouded in obscurity. Abu Hayyan was a philosopher among philosophers, a theologian among theologians, a linguist among linguists, and a mystic among mystics—his horizons so broad that they encompassed the inquiry into the essence and attributes of God.
