Every topic in philosophy is termed a "problem." For example, there is the problem of the soul, the problem of humanity, the problem of nature, the problem of knowledge, and so on, the problem of God. The initial impetus for James Daniel Collins, the late, renowned professor of philosophy at Saint Louis University, to undertake this study stemmed from his observation of the close connection between the modern history of the problem of "God" and contemporary reflections on it. It is not simply a matter of the astute philosopher of today making greater strides in his study of God by referring to the thinking of his predecessors on this subject; rather, he will not advance a single step without such a reference. The first aim of this book is to identify the main patterns of philosophical approaches to the problem of God in the modern era, emphasizing those historical trends that continue to shape our contemporary conceptions of God.
