The novel delves into Dostoevsky's personal experience with gambling addiction, offering a sharp psychological study of obsession, desire, and destructive impulsivity. The events unfold in a fictional European city called Roulettenburg, where the narrator, Alexei Ivanovich, works as a private tutor for a dysfunctional Russian family living in anticipation of a delayed inheritance.
Alexei falls in love with Polina, a mysterious and volatile woman who exerts a kind of emotional control over him, sometimes pushing him to humiliating acts, exploiting his pathological attachment to her. In turn, gambling becomes his only refuge, with the roulette table transforming into a space for the illusion of power, freedom, and triumph over fate. With each bet, Alexei oscillates between the euphoria of winning and the despair of losing, until he gradually loses control over himself.
The novel culminates with the appearance of the old grandmother, whose death everyone was awaiting to inherit her fortune. However, she shocks them with her own gambling addiction, losing her wealth with the same impulsiveness that destroys others. Through this paradox, Dostoevsky reveals the absurdity of attachment to money and luck, portraying gambling as a spiritual disease that strips a person of their dignity and will. The novel is not just a story about money, but about the enslavement to desire, and how a person becomes a captive of their own desires when they lose meaning and inner balance.
