"Poor Folk" is Dostoevsky's first published work, notable for its profound humanity and compassionate view of the life of the poor in Russia. The novel tells the story of Makar Devushkin, a low-ranking clerk living a difficult life in St. Petersburg, struggling to make ends meet. Through his daily letters to Varvara Dobroselova, the young woman he loves, the fragility of life and the anxiety of the poor about their fate become clear, as well as their emotional and social struggles.
The novel focuses on patience, sacrifice, and pure love, with Makar appearing as a generous man who strives to make Varvara happy despite his limited means. On the other hand, the letters reveal the details of the daily lives of the poor, from their lack of money and food to their feelings of loneliness and betrayal, highlighting the gap between social classes in Tsarist Russia.
The novel's significance lies in its ability to show humanity in the face of poverty, and in depicting the small emotions and dreams that give life meaning, despite the difficulties. It also emphasizes how sincere love and compassion can provide strength and hope, even in the harshest circumstances, affirming that human dignity is not measured by money, but by faith in others and the human capacity for giving and sacrifice.
