This is an abridged version of Ibn Kathir's commentary by Sheikh Ahmad Shakir, and the abridged version has retained the features
The fundamental principle is: interpreting the Quran with the Quran, compiling verses that indicate, support, or strengthen the intended meaning of the verse being interpreted, then interpreting it with authentic Sunnah, followed by mentioning many sayings of the early generations (Salaf) regarding the interpretation of the verses. The chains of narration (isnad) for hadiths were omitted , with only the name of the Companion and Ibn Kathir's attribution of the hadith being cited. Any hadith deemed weak or defective was also omitted, as were repetitions of sayings of the Companions and their Successors, with only a few being included. Furthermore, Isra'iliyyat (narratives of Jewish origin) and similar sources were omitted, along with lengthy theological discussions, legal rulings, and linguistic and verbal debates not directly related to the interpretation of the verse. Long hadiths and historical events were kept concise.
The longer version focuses on the relevant part. The abridged version preserves the opinions and preferred interpretations of the author , striving to retain his exact words as much as possible.
