He is the one who wrote the commentary on the hadith and compiled it in his explanation of Sahih al-Bukhari. It is Ibn Hajar's most important book, the compilation, composition, dictation, and revision of which took him more than twenty-five years. He began it in early 817 AH, when he was 44 years old, and finished it on the first of Rajab in 842 AH. In it, he compiled the commentaries of his predecessors on Sahih al-Bukhari, elaborating on the explanation of the authentic hadith, clarifying its difficulties, relating matters of scholarly consensus, and elaborating on the differences of opinion in jurisprudence, authentication, weakening of hadiths, language, and Quranic readings. He also paid clear attention to the accuracy of Sahih al-Bukhari and its narrations, highlighting the differences between them. The sources Ibn Hajar used in this work exceeded 1200 books by his predecessors.
