The novel "Notes from Underground" by the Russian Fyodor Dostoevsky is considered one of his most profound and creative literary works, and some consider it his best work indeed. It has been translated into Arabic in more than one translation. Dr. Sami Al-Droubi translated it under the title: "In My Basement", and it was translated again under the name: "Notes from the Basement", and Anis Zaki Hassan translated it under the title: "The Chatty Man".

Notes from Underground is considered the first existential novel. The novel is told by a hateful, unnamed man who tries to annoy his readers while working as a civil servant in St. Petersburg. The novel is dominated by a monologue, especially in the first section. Through this section, we get to know the writer-hero, his thoughts and beliefs. It is a novel closer to memoirs, but it is painful and difficult to repeat.
