A new edition of the engaging biography of the great thinker Dr. Abdel-Wahab El-Messiri. It documents his individual transformations in thought and methodology, while simultaneously chronicling an entire generation, or a segment of it. The transformations of the author of this biography are by no means unrelated to what was happening around him. From this perspective, the events of the author's life are not significant in and of themselves, but rather lie in the light they shed on his intellectual development. The author understood many of the events of his personal (subjective) life through the same underlying basic themes and analytical categories that he used in his (objective) studies and research, and not the other way around.
However, this intellectual journey is the author's own, as he interacted with the experiences around him from his birth and upbringing in Damanhour until he moved to Alexandria, then to New York, and finally to Cairo, where he settled. If this intellectual journey is a non-autobiographical biography, it is also a non-objective biography—the biography of a person who encounters the public and private spheres of his life. Therefore, he does not only mention abstract intellectual issues, but always complements them with events from his life or quotations from his writings that demonstrate how the (public) intellectual issue translated itself into specific events and facts in his personal (private) life, using the author's fluent, profound, and sarcastic style. This new edition features several additions, the most important of which is a large photo appendix that covers the author's journey and the various stages of his life.
