The last moments in Guantanamo were as difficult as the first. They are like a knife wound; entering is painful and exiting is painful, but the two pains are different. They share the anxiety of the unknown, like someone entering a tunnel when they fear what the terrifying darkness surrounds, and like someone exiting it when they worry about what the light hides within them. It is not surprising that a free person fears the clang of chains, but rather surprising that a prisoner dreads the ululations of good news. How painful it is to stand on the threshold of freedom, anxious about it, like a small child who looks forward to walking, running, and jumping, but is anxious about falling, hesitating between crawling and getting up. What I mention in this book has actually happened. Stories that are closer to imagination. I lived them moment by moment for fourteen years, to place them in your hands without shortcoming or exaggeration. If they reach a living heart that searches for the truth and is sincere to it, then they are written for it. But if they encounter watchful eyes and hateful hearts that search for what condemns and search for what is bad, that see the brutality of the oppressor but do not see, that hear the groans of the oppressed but do not hear, that call to the truth but do not understand and refuse to understand, then let them look for another book to entertain themselves with, for this book was not written for those who do not carry within them a human heart.
