This is a book about children, from the time they can use artistic materials in a meaningful way to the time when they are no longer called children. It is a book about all children, including those who simply need to be provided with the most favorable conditions for growth and development. It is a book about normal, healthy children, and their normal or natural needs for expression, mastery, self-definition, and identity, and their need for special means of coping with stress or distress. It is a book about children with special needs and problems, those for whom the process of growing up has been painful because of unchangeable disabilities or because of early, unbearable damage. This is a book about all children, and their right to the opportunity to realize themselves and to deal creatively with the damage done to them through art. Rather, it is a book about the little one inside each of us, and about our understanding of that inner child, and about our use of ourselves, in childhood and adulthood, for the benefit of another person's development.
