Many books have been written on the subject of major sins, the most prominent of which is the book before us, The Book of Major Sins by Imam Al-Dhahabi, and Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami, who added his book Al-Zawahir ‘an Iqtiraaf Al-Kaba’ir. Major sins include the major ones, such as disbelief in Allah or associating partners with Him, which are not forgiven except by repentance before the appointed time. Others, lesser than that, are considered by the Sunnis to be sinners and diminish faith, but do not constitute disbelief, so the person who commits them is judged to be a sinner or to have deficient faith. For this reason, Allah has prescribed punishments for some of these sins, such as theft, adultery, drinking alcohol, premeditated murder, aggression, highway robbery, and others. These punishments are either deterrents or expiations, so the person who commits them is punished in this world and will not be punished again in the hereafter.
