From its mysterious birth in the pre-Islamic era to the present day, through endless ebb and flow, poetry has remained the truest expression of the Arab spirit, with all due respect to those who say that the age of the novel has replaced the age of poetry. However, contrary to what some imagine and others wish, the poet himself has not had a single, fixed role that remains unchanged despite the changing history. The poet's role has shifted, time and again, with the chapters of the historical epic, which has never remained constant.

.. For the reader, if he wishes, to consider what I will say in this article about my ancestors and my peers among the poets a caricature of satire, this aggressor/victimized art. I can, considering that what is permissible for a poet is not permissible for others, satirize the members of my poetic tribe, while reserving, at the same time, my right to reject this satire and confront it, when it comes from outside the tribe.
