Like Abelard and Héloïse, buried in the same grave, their names are forever linked. They were a legendary couple. We cannot think of one without thinking of the other: Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. At the end of World War II, Sartre and Beauvoir quickly established themselves as freethinkers and committed thinkers. They wrote in all genres: plays, novels, philosophical studies, travelogues, autobiographies, memoirs, biography, and journalism. Sartre's first novel, "Nausea," was a sensation in the world of contemporary French fiction. His ten plays became the talk of the Paris theater season. His philosophical studies, "Being and Nothingness" and "Critique of Dialectical Thought," and others, shocked the world, along with his literary monographs on Jean Genet and Gustave Flaubert. But he will perhaps be best remembered for his autobiography, "Words," which won him the Nobel Prize. Beauvoir will always be associated with her important book, “The Other Jinn,” her memoirs, and her brilliant novel, “The Mandarins,” in which she evoked the atmosphere of Europe after World War II.
