The Glass Bead Game is one of Hermann Hesse's greatest and most powerful works. In my opinion, it is the greatest work of its time. Hesse worked on it between 1931 and 1942. He began it two years before Hitler's rise to power in Germany and completed it three years before the catastrophe of World War II. It was a cry of reason in a time when reason had been lost. Naturally, the Nazi regime banned its printing in Germany. The first edition appeared in Switzerland and was not printed in Germany until after the war in 1946.
