Since the first edition of this short novel was published in Cairo, it has been widely read and appreciated. It has been translated into Spanish and Italian, and its English translation won the Arkansas Prize in 2002. It has been taught at numerous universities, including the University of Michigan and Harvard in the United States, the University of Cadi Ayyad in Morocco, and the University of London.
