Is life really short?

Life is too worrying and too short for those who forget the past, neglect the present, and fear the future. When the chains of death tighten their grip, these wretched people will realize that they have been preoccupied with nothing. The fact that they invoke death does not prove that their lives were long; rather, their ignorance has cast upon them turbulent emotions that have caused them to throw themselves at the very things they fear most.

The days seem long to them. They complain that the hours pass slowly, and they don't know how to make time pass. They want to jump over those days in every way. Any delay in the anticipated events generates boredom for them. However, the time of true joy is short and fleeting, for they rush from one amusement to another and cannot remain fixed on any one desire. Consider the work you have accomplished in this long life, and how many people have stolen from your life without you even knowing it. See how much of your little share remains to you, and you will find that you are dying before your time.
