

Carlo Guarmani, an Italian Arabist fluent in Arabic, made this journey in 1864.
Moving between the tribes of Al-Jawf, to Unaizah, then to Hail in Al-Qassim, under the pretext of searching for purebred horses, his real mission was political reconnaissance, assigned to him by the Emperor of France, Napoleon III, who dreamed of establishing an alliance with the Arab empire he was working to establish. For this purpose, he had dispatched the British traveler, William Gifford Palgrave, two years earlier.
