Al-Asfuriya is a Levantine word meaning insane asylum. The hero is a professor who narrates the history of the Arab nation in a clinical therapy session to a psychiatrist. Here, Al-Qusaibi wanted to say that the insane asylum is the only place where sane people can speak in this world.
In this novel, Al-Qusaibi blended local dialects and criticized the inferiority complex among Arab intellectuals and elites, the problem of authority, and other chronic Arab problems with unprecedented boldness.
The novel ends with the psychiatrist going crazy and Al-Qusaibi escaping to other worlds. It is a crazy ending for a crazy world.
