"Under the Banner of Occupation," as His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah states, "is a collection of Sharjah's historical narratives, which I have categorized and disseminated among the people of this era, to simplify the most significant documented events in Sharjah's history, and to describe its social structure, etiquette, customs, and morals. I also describe the city of Sharjah, its neighborhoods, houses, inhabitants, and trade in the form of historical narratives."
His Highness adds: "Publishing history in this manner encourages people to investigate its parts and verify its details, elucidating it in a way that readers do not find in ordinary history books. In selecting this collection of narratives, I have striven to present a sequential and interconnected account, as much as possible, of the most important events in Sharjah's history, from 1820 to 1866, under the title 'Under the Banner of Occupation'."
The book consists of nine chapters with the titles: "After the War Lay Down its Burdens," "Hatred Still Lingers," "The Return of the Salafi Call," "The Rebel and the City," "Haji Yaqoub in the Agency House," "Abu Bashit's Rounds and Raids," "The War of the Neighbors," "Salmeen bin Nasser Al Suwaidi," and "Days of Hardship."
The book includes a large number of footnotes extracted from thousands of pages of historical documents and several appendices containing rare maps of Sharjah, including a map of Sharjah in 1822, another in 1864, and a map showing the pearl diving areas.
