Refinement of Sunan Abi Dawud and Clarification of its Defects and Problems

Ibn al-Qayyim's (d. 751 AH) "Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud" (Refinement of Sunan Abi Dawud) is not strictly a commentary; however, it is indispensable for anyone interested in Sunan Abi Dawud. It is one of the most invaluable books for explaining the defects (illal) of hadiths, resembling books on defects (kutub al-illal). Its focus is on clarifying the defects of hadiths in the manner of the great early imams. When addressing a hadith, he presents all that has been said about it and its defects. Many of these are his own deductions and insights into the defects and their sources. He is a master in this field, discussing the defects of a single hadith over twenty or thirty pages, flowing like a valley.

In its introduction, Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) states: "The great Imam, Zaki al-Din Abu Muhammad Abd al-Azim al-Mundhiri (may Allah have mercy on him), excelled in his abridgement and refinement, attributing its hadiths, clarifying its defects, and making it accessible. He excelled so much that he left no room for further improvement, and he was so advanced that those who came after him followed in his footsteps." He then says: "Therefore, I made his book the best provision and took it as a treasure for the Day of Judgment. So, I refined it in a similar way that he refined the original, adding discussions on defects he remained silent about or did not complete, addressing the authentication of hadiths he did not authenticate, discussing problematic texts he did not unlock, and adding many relevant hadiths in chapters he did not refer to." He says: "I expanded upon important points that a discerning and diligent reader might not find in any other book."

This edition is authenticated against three manuscript copies, as part of the Dar Ata'at al-Ilm series. It is distinguished by its scholarly annotations and precise textual organization, making it an important reference for students of hadith and fiqh.
