The Flowers of Buffoonery opens in a seaside sanitarium where the narrator of No Longer Human, Yozo Oba, is recuperating after a failed suicide attempt. Friends and family visit, nurses and police officers enter and exit his room. Against this grim backdrop, Yozo and his visitors try to keep things light, even farcical: playing cards, smoking cigarettes, vying for attention, cracking jokes, attempting to make one another laugh. Dazai is known for delving into the darkest corners of human consciousness, but in The Flowers of Buffoonery he satirizes those very emotions: the follies and hardships of youth, love, self-loathing, and depression. Offering a glimpse into the lives of a group of outsiders in pre-war Japan, The Flowers of Buffoonery is an inventive and darkly comedic addition to Osamu Dazai’s masterful and captivating body of work.
