In this book, we will introduce what we call the "Whole-Brain, Drama-Free Approach to Discipline," offering principles and strategies that will remove much of the drama and heightened emotions often accompanying discipline. As a result, your life as a parent will be easier, and your parenting more effective. Most importantly, you will build connections in your child's brain that foster emotional and social skills serving them now and throughout their lives—all while strengthening your relationship. Our hope is that you will discover that moments requiring discipline are truly among the most important times we have the opportunity to powerfully shape our children. When these challenges arise—and they inevitably will—you will be able to view them not just as scary disciplinary situations filled with anger, frustration, and drama, but also as opportunities to connect with your children and redirect them to behavior that better serves them and your entire family. If you are a teacher, therapist, or coach also responsible for the growth and happiness of children, you will find these techniques work well with your students, patients, clients, or even your teams. Recent discoveries about the brain provide us with deep insights into the children we care for, what they need, and how to discipline them in ways that promote optimal development. We wrote this book for anyone who cares for a child and is interested in learning compassionate, effective, and scientifically-based strategies to help children thrive. We will use the word "parent" throughout this book, but if you are a grandparent, teacher, or another important person in a child's life, this book is also for you. Our lives are more valuable through collaboration, and this collective approach can begin with many adults cooperating in raising a child from their earliest days onward. We hope that all children have caring individuals in their lives who thoughtfully plan how to interact with them, and when necessary, apply discipline in ways that build skills and strengthen relationships.
