This book is about an idea that is becoming clearer every day, gaining increasing momentum in classrooms, clinics, laboratories, and lecture halls, both nationally and internationally. According to this new way of thinking, the traditional wisdom in child-rearing that has prevailed over the past few decades has been proven wrong. We have been focusing on skills and abilities that are not suitable for our children, and we have been using the wrong strategies to instill and teach these skills. However, it might be too early to call this theory a new school of thought. In many cases, researchers who contribute to this growing body of knowledge have been working in isolation from one another, but these scientists and educators have begun to unite their efforts and forge connections between different academic disciplines. This allows the evidence they gather to change the way we raise our children, manage our schools, and build our social safety net.
