I hope this book will provide you with new ideas about food and health, and that it will be more than just exciting facts to share with others. Before we begin, let me mention two important points: consult your healthcare provider: health problems can be serious. If you are making a change to your diet—and I hope you are—it’s helpful to talk to your doctor about it. This isn't because changing your diet is dangerous; quite the opposite, it’s a very good idea. However, people who take medications—for diabetes or high blood pressure, for example—often need to adjust their dosages when they make improvements to their diets. Sometimes, they are able to stop taking medications entirely. Do not do this on your own, but consult your healthcare provider to reduce your medication dosage, or stop taking it if appropriate. Also, talk to your doctor before jumping into a new exercise regimen. If you are sedentary, have serious health problems, have a lot of weight to lose, or are over forty, consult your doctor and ask if you are ready to exercise and what pace you should start at. Get complete nutrition. The eating method presented in this book is likely to improve your overall nutrition, in addition to the specific health benefits you will gain. Nevertheless, make sure you receive complete nutrition. Please read the details in Chapter 9. In particular, make sure to take daily vitamins, or another reliable source of vitamin B12, as it is essential for nerve and blood health.
