This book was first released twenty years ago, on my fiftieth birthday, April 8, 1997. Unlike The Beatles' story, the book was neither an instant commercial success nor a critical success; in fact, the book's release and the storm of criticism that followed were quite the opposite.

This book was originally self-published because every publisher I approached rejected it, and some rejection letters contained comments like: "You don't know what you're talking about." From this, I learned that most publishers were more like my highly educated poor dad than my rich dad; most publishers disagreed with Rich Dad's lessons on money, just as my poor dad did.
