Author's Name: Dr. Daniel G. Amen
Since this book was first published in 1998, many changes have occurred in both the field of neuroscience and Amen Clinics. Our medical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases has grown exponentially, and our operations have expanded from a single clinic serving only Northern California residents to a nationwide network of clinics treating children, adolescents, and adults from 111 countries. Our database of gamma encephalography—the primary functional brain imaging test we use at Amen Clinics—has grown from approximately 5,000 scans in 1998 to more than 100,000 in 2015, making us a global leader in applying brain imaging science to help those suffering from emotional problems such as stress, depression, and bipolar disorder; behavioral challenges such as various addictions, weight control, and anger; cognitive problems such as brain fog or memory problems; and learning disabilities, including attention deficit disorder (ADHD).
When this book was first written, the medical team at Amen Clinics prescribed more medications for mental illness than we do today. Today, we choose more natural approaches to healing and strengthening the brain, such as supplements and lifestyle changes (nutrition, exercise, or learning new knowledge), whenever possible. While we still use medications when needed and believe that, when used correctly, they can be lifesaving, we firmly believe that physicians should first do no harm and use the least toxic and most effective treatment methods. It is not unusual for a new patient to come to Amen Clinics for the first time after being prescribed four, five, or eight medications and still suffering, and it is no longer surprising. Indeed, a child has come to our clinic in Reston, Virginia, on seventeen medications. Consequently, we take longer to wean patients off these medications than it does to prescribe new ones. We discovered that most of our new patients had not been suggested by their previous doctors to follow a healthy lifestyle or take a medical supplement before coming to us.
